About Me
My Path
In college I completed an interdisciplinary major of literature, history, and philosophy, with art history folded in. It wasn’t the most practical degree, but it serves me well listening to people’s life stories and existential concerns. After college I worked in an organization focused on ending poverty and promoting human rights. Every evening I took modern dance classes, something I had loved growing up. Although I thought I was too old to be a dancer after high school, in my mid-twenties I decided it wasn’t too late. I threw myself into dancing full-time and was pleased to dance professionally in New York. This was exhilarating but it took a toll on my body and I felt called to social work. I completed my MSW and moved to California.
My Experience
Since then I have had over 20 years of experience in the mental health field, with the privilege of supporting people of many backgrounds in a variety of settings. Before opening my private practice nearly a decade ago, I worked in the psychiatric and medical emergency rooms of San Francisco General Hospital, a level 1 trauma center, as well as in mental health clinics, and schools. These diverse experiences have given me a broad, real-world perspective on the challenges people face, which often change their views of life. A peer-reviewed article I wrote about spirituality in social work practice has been frequently cited and used in educational settings around the world.
My former dance career has allowed me to understand firsthand how the arts and creativity can be a source of strength and resilience. I have completed a masters level certification as a dance/movement therapist which has allowed me to merge my dance background with social work and healing.
I have lived in multiple countries, which has deepened my appreciation for cultural diversity. I strive to be an ally to people of color and am committed to ongoing cultural responsiveness in my work. I welcome LGBTQIA clients. I also care about about sustainability in the face of climate change and related to this I completed a certification in permaculture design.
My Approach
I view therapy as a partnership. I approach each client with curiosity, empathy, and respect. I am committed to creating a safe, collaborative space where you can address your challenges and achieve your goals, following your aspirations.
I take into account the mind/body connection. Oftentimes years of therapy don’t yield results because only the thoughts are addressed and not the whole body, which stores your experiences.
When I was a professional dancer, my body was my instrument. Now as a therapist, I use my presence and attunement to support healing. I treasure the authenticity that is present in a therapy session and the chance to help people focus on what is important to them.
